    Help on identifying Knock

    Hello ,
I'm fairly new to dodge tuning the knock PID have gotten me so thrown around and lost it's almost frustrating i have searched the entire world wide web for a definite answer but have not found anything

this car is a 20115 dodge charger 5.7 with CAI,CORSA catback, Cat delete and a tune and im doing a data log to see if there is a knock or not .

so i logged ST kock ,Long term knock ,total knock and knock sensors , now i understand that the short term is the instantaneous retardation of timing while long term is the most important to log and it shouldnt be more than 1 top now what about the total knock retard it's all over the place going as low as -6 while the knock sensors voltage hasn't gone over 1.7 volts if someone could take a look at the log and tell me for god sake the difference between these values and how the voltage has a correlation to knock and if the car has any real knock i would be extremely grateful
    Thank You.

Knock sensor voltage is mapped in your knock sensor threshold tables. These are in voltage, which are multipled by the severity tables to give you a knock retard target. With the factory settings, at 1.7 volts the ecm sees this as knocking. In about 95% 0f scenarios

I?m extremely grateful for your reply , thank you now i understand how voltage works but what about the other knock PID

    Total knock retard
    Short term and long term
    Plus the knock octance retard
can you give me a very brief explanation on them and which one of them should i use when reducing the spark timing table

short term and long term is just the computer memorizing where its seeing knock based on your fuel, atmospheric conditions and driving habits. This is done so it can anticipate knock before it happens. total knock is just that, how much knock it is pulling after all adders and multipliers
knock octane(usually speaking) is the computer anticipating knock based on fuel. in gm's, there is a low and high octane table, and the ecm floats between both based on octane levels, in these ecms, it literally uses an octane adjustment modifier to correct based on the base spark tables

now in the log i attached i saw a short term knock retard of 5 and long term of 1 but the octane knock was 5 , i noticed that the total knock retard followed the octane and was -6 does that mean the pcm is pulling 6 degress of timing due to the octane ??

I would think it would be the other way around. octane would be long term, where as sort term would be immediate. long term plus short term, is total knock
