Question "Read vehicle" results in "Engine PWR Reduced" and "Engine Disabled"

Hi, new to HPtuners and tuning in general, I have recently connected the MPVI2 interface to my Chevy HHR 2.4 (manual trans) to "read vehicle" with VCM Editor (version 4.4.4).

Reading actually worked fine (engine was off), but it gave me quite a scare: the Check Engine light came on during reading and the car info display showed "Engine PWR Reduced" and then "Engine Disabled". The engine wouldn't start until I removed the car keys, locked the doors, unlocked the doors and then tried to start the engine again, which fortunately worked.

Is this known behaviour? Do I have to brace myself for other surprises when writing (haven't tried that yet)?

I have a 2006 Silverado 5.3 and whenever I read or write to the computer, my readout will show service 4WD and the anti lock light light will come on.I am pretty sure after doing anything with the computer you need to remove key and open the door to cycle the computer to off.

When the device is reading/writing, a couple things happen, its pulling info over the communication bus, and to do so correctly, it typically sends "hush" messages to other modules, this helps eliminate random bits of info clouding the read/write process. When the hush messages are sent, most module to module communication stops, when it stops, is when these reduced engine power, etc messages pop up. This is normal behavior on a lot of vehicles
