Thread: Bolt on silverado idle issues

Bolt on silverado idle problems first vve startup

I failed the maf last night now that i am done tuning that. i put the truck in speed density loaded the tune and this morning was going to log my eq error. well on first start the truck will barely idle. i have timing swinging from 30 degrees to 5 degrees. MAP and idle are swinging as well. I only let the truck run for about a minute before i had to shut it off and reload the maf tune. I have eq error all the way up in the 30-40 range. i have adjusted the ve coeffecients from the little bit of idle time that it had but i am thinking that there is something else wrong here. its a 2016 silverado 6.2 with headers and an intake. Could the stock ve coeffecients have been that far off? The other thing i noticed was the commanded afr was below 14. I have checked open loop tables but most if not all of my mulitpliers are set to 1. I have been in open loop maf for about two months now and the commanded eq ratio has always been 1.

Still no dice. Tried adding 20% fuel to the vve table just to try and get it to idle. No result in a positive direction

Your check engine light probably is not lit right, Engine Diag>> MAF fail High to 0 ,MAF fail Low back to original. P101-103 MIL on 1st Err ( P106 ??)
Engine Airflow>>Dynamic>>Dynamic Airflow set High RPM Disable and Re-Enable to original values.
In VCM scanner, what is the Alcohol% PID show? In the tune, at about 10% ethanol fuel will be under 14 AFR.
Engine>>Fuel>>Stoichiometry>> Stoich AFR table based on E% flex fuel.
    Have fun.

I have p0101-0103 set to mil on first error. Only one generating an ses is p0103. Do I need to see the ses for all 3? I will the the dynamic airflow back to original settings again. It didn’t make a difference in the first attempt. And I have a wired flex fuel sensor and have been on 9.0-9.4% E for quite some time now but my stoich tables are adjusted to correlate with %E. However the %E is not changing between my maf only and maf failed tune but commanded eq ratio is.

Tried it again and just had to keep my foot on the throttle to stabilize it. So far I have had to increase the vve table by 30% to get it to idle. Idle torque is also increasing so that is a good sign.

yes. i drove it today and got a log in. i am unable to get the p0103 ses on but the p0102 is giving the ses light. maf hz is still reading in the scanner but i can tell that the truck isnt using the maf tables because of how far off the wideband is. commanded eq ratio is back to normal as well.

Please post your updated file. The last one you posted the P0101 was set for no error. You did change that to 1st Error right and CEL comes on for a failed MAF P101 or you are not in SD mode. Headers and intake ( is it cold-air or a new intake manifold) should not need much tweaking. You mentioned adjusting coefficients? There shows changes in TB Throttle Area Limits>>MAX Area so you have a bigger TB too? The changes in change log are unfamiliar to me especially for 2 simple bolt ons, doubt I can help much. Example making changes to the SOI for direct injection is pretty advanced and usually a cam change would be the reason. How did you add the ethanol sensor to on the E92 ECU? I would like to do that too!
    Good luck.

I am logging maf status and it is showing failed. It’s a 6.2 truck so maybe that explains the throttle body numbers that you see? I haven’t made any changes to them.

SOI changes help with knock and can also result in a power increase because of the increased efficiency. A lot of reading to do on that but I recommend it.

load a stock tune. Bolt ons will run fine on a stock tune. If it doesnt run properly on a stock tune, you have mechanical problems. Just unplug your MAF for Sd tuning. Absolutely no reason to change and DTC's. Sure you will get a MIL light, but who cares. You know you are tuning.

Well if I had mechanical problems why would going back to the maf only tune resolve the issue? The idle cells of the vve table were off, past that I have only been around +-5%. Once I got past the 800 rpm range it steadied right out.

The intake air temp sensor on my truck is internal to the maf. Won’t unplugging it just make it even harder to tune not having the iat temps reading?

Hondaeater my truck comes wired for a flex fuel sensor you just have to install it and update the tune.

tjd1991 I will look into that thanks I want to add to my 06 P59 and it only has a virtual sensor.
Not having the stock, tune I looked at another 6.2 I have and it showed a different Max Area for ET. No worries. Hope you get the idle right on SD. Looking forward to compare scans if you post them. Especially interested in your gains from the SOI with your spark tables. Lot to look forward to.
