I ended up buying a second hand laptop on ebay solely to have something reliable for tuning and keeping this stuff off the office laptop.
I got a Dell Latitude 7480 with Intel Core i7 processor and 16Gb RAM, probably overkill but I wanted it to last more than a year.
Battery time and a keyboard with back lighting is somethings I really like about this one, most of the time I am in the car flashing or logging its dark outside and its nice to be able to see what buttons I try to push

    Cheers,

I have never logged "Distance since MIL clear (SAE)" so I don't know how it usually behaves.

I like a late dinner, but that's a bit too late for me! We're UTC -5:00 here on the US East Coast!

Only fault it had before and after the event was a P0420... Cat Efficiency issue. I kept coding it out but when Tyler would tweak the tune it kept getting cleared!

That's Tyler's logging set-up. I'm still learning to navigate so I used his otherwise I'd still be lumping along with SAE values!!! THANKS TYLER!!!

    Howdy All!!!

Thought I'd give post an update with findings and fun!

I figured out what it was that happened to the motor. Fixed a couple of lingering issues. Found out a few things that didn't work as planned. And I managed to take a 1k mile road trip without much of an issue!

Findings: So I ended up with 3 lifters failed (1 on #1 and 2 on #3) and a AVS solenoid acting funky on #3.

Lifters: Appears that the lifters got clogged. They may have been clogged for a while and I never noticed, or my "enthusiastic" driving caused it. I know why... not how. Turns out that in some dark crevasse some walnut media from the initial rebuild was hiding. It clogged the lifters and caused it to leak down. with one on a cyl, it probably would have gone unnoticed, but with 2 on #3, it made it really noticeable. This may have caused the issue with the AVS (Exhaust Valve Lift) system or vice versa.

Chain Tensioner: This was actually OK. What I think happened is that the pair of compressed lifters unloaded the cam when on #3 and it snapped the chain a bit and let it jump one tooth at high rpm. My turning it slowly by hand let this happen in extreme. Luckily it was only one tooth and the car was drivable. I did find out that VAG has updated the chain (not just the tensioner) to limit stretching, so that might be a component of it.

Put it all back together and hit the button.... Vrooom. Purred like a kitten... with a hitch in it's purr!! Still had a lumpy idle. Not as bad but still off. Although now it was tossing an AVS DTC. I had replace a plug due to it being broken with an aftermarket plug and I thought maybe it wasn't seating properly. Long story short... when you rewire DC plugs... observe the polarity!

With that fixed and Elif really purring now, I felt OK in taking a trip. 1000 miles of joy. She drove awesome.... except for her drinking habit! I was seeing her suck 16oz of oil into the catch can every 200 miles. It would appear that the K04 and Alex's Africa Plate mods are not conducive to each other. I was literally pulling oil through the motor into the turbo. It ended up at an elbow in the IC plumbing and under heavy boost would suck a slug into the intake and nearly hydro-lock the motor! BAD!!!

So I rethought the process, went back to the OEM with an "ECS" arrangement (can between the PCV and the turbo). Oil depositing went to nearly zero, but what was there was a horrible frothy mess. It would seem that the can I used put the baffle screen on the IN side and that allowed oil to be whipped between plates. I have now reversed the flow and added a #70 mesh screen. The thought being that I can get the laden air into the can. Plaster the oil on the screen and let it drip back without whipping it. That was today, so we'll see!

She's now stupidly fast on a basic tune and now I can start feeding Tyler some logs and see what she can really do!

So enough talking... on to the build porn!

So this round I had a lot more time and $$ to play with, so I got to do a lot of the little things I wasn't able to before. This time I... Cerakoted EVERYTHING!!!! I Koted the Head and Cam Ladder. I hate looking at dirty metal and it helps to locate leaks better! It also helps to keep the heat load WAY down under the hood. I can drive her as hard as I want, park and open the hood to go to work. The metal is still hot (no magic here), but the radiant heat is far less. Oil and Coolant temps are exactly the same as before so it's not stressing anything!

I redid the koting on the valves, because this time I got to Micro-Slick the back of the valves in addition to the intake ports and baffles. It's a oil-phobic coating for motor parts, so it should prevent the carbon build up (can't stick to them) especially when adding the water/meth injection to help steam clean the pots.

If nothing else, the Koting let the suction cup stick to it so lapping the valves literally took 30 minutes for all 8. It never fell off once!

I also started Powder Coating to go with the Cerakoting. Rims and other bits are already being planned!!

I'll get the other pics uploaded... my Dropbox isn't syncing for some reason, but this will suffice for now! Enjoy!!

Oh... and while I was in there I managed to tighten the WG just a hair. Can I tell you that VAGs placement of that damn thing is possibly the worst engineering feat... surpassing BMWs need to drop the motor to change plugs on their 12cyl motor!!!

It took me nearly 3 hours, 4 modified wrenches and countless scratches and scrapes to get maybe 1/2 turn out of it!

But it was a good half turn!

Goes to 21psi and flattens out. I actually got an over-boost fault at 127mph. How do I know it was 127? Because that's what my limiter was still set at!!!

    Not any more!

Here's some log porn after I got all the PCV and other issues worked out! No meth injection yet! The best is yet to come! Look ahead to 17:17:27 for the good pull.

Nice to see you are getting the bits together again and that it wasn't more severe than that.
The mods to the Africa plate did make a large difference for me but wasn't the magical solution I had hoped. Although I am not pull as much oil now I suspect I have a quite high crank case pressure since I am now starting to see oil being pushed out the oil filler cap. I have also started considering going back to stock-ish with some cans on the lines but I need to plan it better this time in order not to have 10ft of lines running back and forth.
