    help with whining fuel pump

have a vortec 5300 in 68 camaro with walbro gss340 pump in a fuel sump pan with return-style pressure regulator set to 50psi

old pump sometimes made lower pitched humming sound

noticed the sound changed when i had the turn signals on. there was no fuel pump relay installed. doh!

installed relay & replaced pump assuming humming sound was due to lack of power & pump may now be damaged

now the new pump has a higher pitch whine, audio-clip @ https://ls1tech.com/forums/attachmen...-fuel-pump.wav

there is plenty of power to the pump now as both relay & battery are in the trunk above the fuel tank

what would cause this noise from the pump ? could the sound be due to a vibration in the sump ?

many thanks for any input offered

Can you attach a picture of the installation? It's best to attach the pump as close to the tank as possible, and as low as practical.

sump sits on bottom of fuel tank. pump sits on sock filter in bottom of sump. vertical bracket connects sump to top of fuel tank

If the pump is making contact with the bottom of the fuel cell, that's probably the source of your noise. Most kits provide some sort of isolation so the pump isn't making contact with any metal components due to NVH.

    Edit:
I wanted to add that it's possible the pump was much quieter before you added the relay because it wasn't getting adequate voltage and was spinning much slower.
