Simple transmission shift / chart question

I have always had trouble getting my head around downshift points... but I only mess around with tuning every once in a while.

The question is: When I am filling in data points for 5-4 shift, its a very simple Throttle position vs Output Shaft Speed. Sometimes there are large gaps in data, for example the throttle position goes from 37% to 76%. Is this data graphed between data points and read by the computer? in other words, is the data between 37% and 76% filled in as a straight line between the two points, such that at 50% throttle, there is an Output shaft rpm that will trigger a downshift? OR does the TCM read this as if the throttle is between 37 and 76 it won't shift until it hits the data point at the 37%? So if the throttle is at 50% it won't shift until the RPM drops to 1800 (data point at 37%).

    thanks for the help

Everything between set points in the cells is interpolated.
