Exclamation Windows 10 and MPVI2 Recognition Issues

    Hello All,

Here is my problem... tried connecting my MPVI2 to my desktop as my laptop had to be wiped and Windows re-installed to become operable again.

I installed following the HPTuners recommendations, using the latest software and drivers on their website, as of 07/10/2022. Software opens as it should, but my desktop and now my revived laptop running Windows 10 Pro, both have the exact same issue. They will not recognize the MPVI2 as anything other than a "USB converter device" and an "unknown device".

The driver info for the "converter" shows the correct version and dates as the HPTuners provided drivers, but the unknown device is useless and won't accept drivers.

I've tried different cables, ports, both on my desktop and laptop, both have the exact same issue... will not recognize the MPVI2 correctly.
I tried plugging into a vehicle to try and trigger a firmware update, but the "protocol fails".

I'm at wits end with this thing. I opened a ticket, ticket 55608, providing photos and description, received a canned answer to use the website drivers, which I already did, and including info about flashing the vehicle, which I can't even do yet as the computer(s) don't recognize the device as it should be.

I'm not sure what to do. Has anyone had any sucess with Windows 10 and a MPVI2? I see lots of issues all over the internet, but no real solutions.

I previously had the MPVI2 working with Window 7 and had no issues at all. With Windows 10 this thing is useless.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in adavance,

    Mike Thompson Jr.

I've included photos of some of the details.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance to you but I have used an original mpvi and the MPVI2 on window 7, 7 pro, 10 home, 10 pro, and I am currently using Windows 11 with VMware so I can run a large amount of previous versions and for "things" I do. Only suggestion I would have is when you are going to install, instead of just double clicking the install, try using the right button and "run as administrator".
Oh forgot to ask. Do you have any anti virus software running? Some can really screw up installations.

Assuming you have the MPVI2 and the proper drivers from HPTuners website(specifically for MPVI2). Are both of your computers Hewlet Packards? Sometimes HP and Dell computers need to have manufacturer specific chipset and USB drivers installed from their website rather than whatever Windows Update installs. Also, are you using a proper USB cable? A cheap knock off USB cable can cause these sorts of issues. The MPVI2 itself could be an issue, perhaps it needs a firmware update.....although if you can't get it to work on your computer I suppose updating it to the latest firmware wouldn't be possible.

I would check to make sure your computer has all of the windows updates installed, then check Hewlet Packards website for any specific chipset drivers for your model of laptop if it was upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. This alone could be an issue. Some old computers simply are not compatible with newer drivers on Windows 10.

If it were me I would take your HPTuners cable and software to a Best Buy and test it out on a new laptop with with Windows 10 or 11. If that doesn't work then your MPVI2 interface has an issue. If it does work, I would buy the cheapest new laptop available. Maybe not your favorite idea, but there is nothing more annoying than a problematic old laptop and trying to use it with HPTuners where you're datalogging and tuning the car. Imagine the laptop crapping out in the middle of flashing the ECU

Thank you both for your responses.

Chris Martinez from HPTuners Support got back to me and got me fixed up as far as I can tell.

I needed a firmware update which was triggered by downloading the BETA version of the software, opening the BETA editor, Holding the BT button on the MPVI2 while plugging in the cable to the my PC. The PWR light will flash. Then I pulled an infolog, and it triggered the firmware update. Once that was completed, I was able to resync and the license data was shown correctly and I could open and save calibration files properly. I expect that once I connect to the vehicle all will operate correctly.

Thank you Chris and HPTuners for the help. I was so frustrated by this issue, but y'all got me straightened out.
I hope this might help others that are having similar issues.

This Post helped me out GREATLY....Have a 14 GT500 and didn't understand why I couldn't even read/scan the car. My MPVI2 would connect fine to my laptop and sync with HPTuners Servers, but just would not read the car, or any car for that manner. Support stated that I would probably have to get my PCM re-flashed at the dealership to factory, which really would suck. So....After spending some more time I found this forum post and it fixed all my issues. I suspect Firmware issues cause all sorts of connectivity problems for people with MPVI2 Devices. I think they really should make a Firmware upgrade document as a bulleted item in their support documents.
