What do you lose when you upgrade to a new MPVI?

Apologies if this has already been covered, I am sure it has, but likely a long time ago (I've been out of the game for 2 years) and despite efforts to find the answers I was not able.

I am considering trading in my MPVI-1 for the MPVI-3.

I have about 260 credits on my old MPVI-1, mostly for vehicles I no longer tune, but I still have a couple I use. My understanding is that access to advanced features on the MPVI-3 requires a tuning class. While this class may be basic, I'm short on time and prefer not to take a class just to continue modifying vehicles I already own and have invested in.

-Are there exceptions for needing to take a class for vehicles you already had complete advanced access to prior to upgrading?

-What abilities will I lose concerning the new emissions compliance if I upgrade?

    My vehicles are a 2016 Cadillac CTS-V, a 2018 Corvette, and a 2017 Ford F-150.

    Thanks in advance!

In order to ensure that everyone using HP Tuners software understands the emissions laws enforced by the EPA or CARB we have released an advanced training course as explained here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ma0CkdnDkrw&t=15s

If you've already taken the course you should not need to take it again once you upgrade your device.
It doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be done in two weeks...

Keep the MPVI and just buy a new MPVI3 to keep them separate. Use the older software with the MPVI and the newer software with the MPVI3. Hell I'd even use a different laptop with the MPVI3, just to always keep them separate.

I will forever keep my MPVI 1 and older software for older vehicles.

They removed some parameters throughout the last couple years. You dont want to be tied to 5.x.x.

Yeah so I just swapped laptops, wouldn't resync the interface. It was erroring out and saying software version not supported. Tried to go back to the old laptop after that happened, and the same thing happened. So through HpTuners shady business practices, they are FORCING everyone to update software, and will again, FORCE you to update firmware after it FORCES you to update the software. I was using software version 4.10.5 so be wary of syncing your MPVI device to any new PC. I was pretty piss off about this so with that said, I will never purchase another HpTuner product again.

I'm not sure what you did or why that version you were trying to use didn't work but I'm running multiple versions 4 of the software connecting to older MPVI devices and the latest updated Beta & the released version 5 for my MPVI3. All are running on a Windows 11 Pro laptop that is running the latest updated version. It was a new machine about the first of July. Never had a problem with any of them unless I did a read with a new version of HPTuners and MPVI3 then tried to look at the tune using an older version of VCM. I now include the software version as part of my filenames - old IT guy here that tries to keep things easy for myself.

Its because to sync your MPVI device to your laptop and software, you have to have an internet connection to verify with the HpTuners server. The ONLY thing I did was swap PC's. Both PC's had the same software versions. This was a FORCED upgrade.

Didn't force an upgrade from my version 4 when I moved to a new laptop but that was about a month ago so no idea if something changed. I used the version 4 (4.8.7) I always have used to sync with and once I did that, I could use one of my older version 4 VCM suites (4.0.x & 4.2.x - a total of 6 version =s between the two releases) I have loaded on the laptop. I can't use my oldest version 4 suite to sync as that is apparently out of date at this time but a newer v4 worked as I noted above and no issues using a previous v4 suite to read/write as desired. V5 with my MPVI3 will ask more frequently than the older devices and the older software will note that an update is available, but I simply ignore and continue on.

If your MPVI device will not sync to your laptop, its unusable and wont communicate with the software. Once it needs resynced, you WILL be forced to update. Mark my words.

It won't force an update if you're using an older version as I noted - 4.8.7 on an MPVI2 or MPVI2+. Did this back in early July when I got a new laptop running Windows 11 Pro. Just went out and resynced both and no forced update. I assume there was a firmware update in 4.10.x that forces the issue but the older software does not. In my case, using these devices I don't need anything near that release but needed it to resync. Newer vehicles, I need to use my MPVI3 but don't think it will run on any version 4 software so not the same issue. My older stuff never needs to communicate once everything is loaded and keys updated if necessary since I use them on older (almost always) GM vehicles. MPVI3 connects regularly when I read a newer vehicle because of what is required for different RCMs. What device are you using that gave you the issue with 4.10.x?
