2004 gto ls1, whenever i connect to the vehicle ecu while its running it will cause the car to die. i can then restart the car (with the ecu already connected) and start recording it will run fine, any suggestions as to what could be causing this?

Did the same on my 2004 GTO a couple of times, but not every time. Now I just start scanning before I start the engine.
