    Cam phaser not moving

Just rebuilt the engine in my truck and installed a stock 6.4 truck cam and a new VVT solenoid. Besides the cam and long tubes the truck is stock. I?m running the stock tune with mds disabled and logging ex cam center pos and desired angle and both are stuck on 128 I?ve changed all of the VVT tables and disabled VVT just to see if if I could get any movement out of it but nothing has worked so far. It does have a P000B permanent code but nothing current or pending. I just wanna make sure everything is working right before I start messing with the tune. I thought maybe the VVT catalyst heating tables were causing issues since I have long tubes but changing them didn?t do any good. Does anyone know of anything in the tune that would prevent VVT from working with long tubes and a stock tune?

My money says it is off one or more teeth

Did you check the centerline before buttoning it up?

Timed on a stand. #1 tdc camshaft pin at 12 and also used the marks on chain, phaser and crank gear. After rotated 360 to verify cam was back at 12 when at tdc. Heads were not installed while doing this. Would I not be getting cam and crank correlation codes if timing was off?

that is what p000b is, no?

isnt that one saying that 'the cam is not going to where it is commanded'?

    dunno...

i do know that it is much easier to zero a degree wheel when the motor is not in a car or truck and when the heads are off of it

What is your oil pressure and temp readings, and do you have a log to share of it running?

If you don't have any active or pending codes, then I'd say the cam not moving is what the PCM is expecting. Which would mean the PCM is not commanding the cam to move for some reason.

Table 36546 drives some logic around VVT enabling, but as far as I understand, is really for engine break in process from the factory as it references total engine miles. This table basically compares engine miles vs oil temp, and provides an RPM for when VVT is allowed to activate.

Installed a phaser and harness out of an another motor I have and it’s working so I returned the new one. Checked resistance on my original harness and it was good so it was definitely the solenoid. Thanks for the suggestions. Now I can start tweaking on the tune and I’ll know if something gets jacked up it’s my fault. Anybody have any pointers on tuning a stock 5.7 with a 6.4 truck cam?

    damn, you got lucky

not only do you not have to take it back apart but i have never had any luck returning electrical parts

    never

pointers? learn how to log before trying to learn how to tune. make it idle right before trying to make it tip in. make it tip in nice before trying to make it recover or coast. do those last. for wot write the map so the cam will be at 2* adv at peak power, and retard it as far as you can, as quick as you can once above peak tq rpm. do not ask for advice in a public forum and then try to apply all the ideas you hear from all the different people all at once. tuning is trial and error. stay open minded and patient

There’s a local parts house that I’ve been going to since I was a kid with my dad so anytime I need something they are my first choice. Big difference dealing with the guy that owns it and the ones at advance/oriellys down the road. The truck actually runs pretty good on the stock tune but I know there’s more on the table. I don’t have to drive it everyday so I’ll just tinker with it and see what it likes and doesn’t. Thanks for the help.

we have ONE of those sole proprietor places still somehow surviving here

maybe they now get reimbursed from there supplier being that just about everything comes from a 3rd world country?

the reason your car or truck still runs pretty good without a tune is that the duration did not just get increased... the lobe centers got widened too

that effectively removed the extra overlap that the increase in duration had created
