    Cold Weather Tuning Tips???

Anyone have any cold weather tuning tips? I've tried quite a bit of different tunes and have it capable of starting on the new motor fairly easy down to 15-18 degrees but below that it does NOT want to start. Let me know if you see anything from the datalog regarding pilot / main duration and timing that you think can get a fire going. Things I've found helpful so far:

1 - use the ECT modifier table. For the 2003 its not an "adder" table as labeled. Rather, it is a minimum timing table so once you multiply the ECT table by the ECT multiplier, that is the timing value minimum you will see commanded.

2 - adding a little bit of cranking timing and reducing duration in high MM3 low RP areas improved starting from the 30 degree range down to now having similar or slightly faster starts at 18 degree ECT temps.

Its quite possible there isn't much left to adjust without the grid heater and on a lower compression motor with bigger injectors (flycut pistons, 188/220 cam, and BB2 injectors), but open to opinions and ideas. I usually plug my vehicle in every winter but had a scare last year before the motor rebuild where it didn't want to start and almost stranded me so all of my tuning efforts are for peace of mind in case I have to leave the truck in an area without electricity overnight again.

Well yeah, it’s essentially a conditional/alternate table, it doesn’t modify the primary engine mode/altitude based tables at all

Have you tried changing the actual base fueling tables like the friction fuel table?

I have not...I have baro, torque, and max output limits disabled on the diesel fueling tab and only using boost limit, but as far as the No Throttle Fueling tables I have not touched those. I have smoothed out the Fuel at Cranking table but did not try reducing the fuel quantity in cold weather. What would you change those to, Jim?

As far as the main injection table I have around 23% less duration than stock injectors in the 80mm3, 5802psi area of the map but it still seems to be over saturating the combustion chamber and killing the flame. Since my last post I did hear back from BBI (very quick response and great support from that company btw) regarding that area of the map and their stage 2 injectors. At 400 BAR (5802psi) the stage 2 injectors "will inject around 90mm? at 400bar/1800?s and around 53mm? at 400bar/1200?s)" vs. stock quantities of around 65mm? and 40mm?, respectively. This would be a 32.5%-38.4% increase over stock in the area I am reaching during really cold weather cranking and I only have the table reduced by 23% so going to reduce further there as well and see if it helps.

This is the duration map I'm going to load today vs. stock quantities and see how it goes. Also going to reduce fuel during cranking quantities below 32 degrees so I don't start cranking at that end of the table. Duration vs. Stock.png
