Back in the mid 80's I had a Chrysler 2.2l turbo. - believe it or not the owner's manual actually recommended occasional full throttle runs to redline during the break-in period (kind of sounds like my average driving habits).
Other owner manuals just recommended avoiding prolonged steady state driving during the first 500 or so miles, with no guidance on maximum RPM. Sounds like there is a range of options.
I couldn't make myself avoid full throttle/redline runs when breaking in the GXP, 51,000 km later there is no significant oil use at 5-8,000 km oil change intervals, so it doesn't look like I hurt anything in this case.
