    Re: Serial vs usb

While the interface is designed for a serial port, any serial to USB converter that creates a "com port" that windows will recognize should work.

We will test a few of them and post the results on the main page.

We will be switching to USB for the next generation
GM CAN protocol, but not the current VPW protocol.

Most laptops do have serial ports - 9 pin ones. Not to be confused with the 25 pin parallel port for printers. Look for a cover in the back near where the docking station connects

    Re: Serial vs usb

Be careful about which USB->Serial converter you purchase. Performance can vary dramtically between the brands. Keyspan went the extra step in their hardware/drivers to ensure throughput was maximized. The USB interface is not the limitation but its how the RS-232 interface and the USB interface communicate between one another.

As a point of reference with LS1Edit...

Keyspan - full read in about 20 minutes
Belkin unit - 1/4 the read rate of the Keyspan.
HP unit - 1/8 the read rate of the Keyspan.
