Any LS1 PCM Changes through years 98-02????

I'm talking about hardware, does the PCM hardware change at all through the years?

I know 98 PCM Binaries have 1 checksum I believe and 99+ are broken up into 8...

However, if the hardware is the same, in theory a 98 PCM should be able to take a 00 flash no problem and a 01 PCM should be able to take a 98 flash no problem..

I'll be picking up a Spare LS1 PCM and want to do some testing.

Not sure if the hardware is the same... maybe talk to PSJ? They're swapping PCMs around for his problem, maybe he'd let you see inside of his?

I think there were some changes though... I believe the 98 used the same PCM as the 97 vettes. The processor was slower or the flash chip was smaller or something... 99+ all use the same container and internals I believe.

    "Accordign to my research.."

98 and 99+ have different pinouts.. All 99+ pinouts are the same for LS1 f-body cars. I may be wrong on this though.

I'm still not sure if the physcal hardware PCM changes though.

Here is what I know, 99+ have the same PCMs... I have been able to successfully flash a 99 PCM with a 02 code.. no problem... 98 uses a completely different PCM.. I attempted to flash a 98 code into a 99+ PCM.. No GO...

At least based on Ls1 edit:

    98 by themselves,
    99-00 the same
    01-02 the same
    03 not sure

At least the way ls1 edit works the you can not write a 01 file on a 99 computer

wasnt the 98 using dual hc11 processors still?

98 was still LS1.. with a 68332 processor, or maybe 68337... I'm not convinced they are really 332.. motorola has several variants that are just a little different, I dont' see why motorola would develop a very specific pin package just for GM when GM could just an off the shelf processor, so to speak.

97 LT1 f-body might have been the dual HC11's still.

as far as i know 99 onwards use the same (maybe some very small board revs??)

You can flash a later cal into a 99 PCM - not with LS1edit of course. (I have a 2001 operating system/cal loaded on my spare PCM which is '99 it runs fine)

    Why wont ls1edit let you?

edit only rewrites the cal segments not the OS (ie. it doesn't flash the entire image to the PCM). That's why it has been enhanced to prevent you from mixing cals from differing seg1 ID's.

It actually only writes to the seg's you have changed, this makes it faster as well.
