It doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be done in two weeks...

We will release it after it has been thoroughly tested on the GM 05 models that are switching to CAN.
USB is not the end all to be all. You are limited to 15 feet before needing another inline hub.
We will most likely offer both as some shops use desktops and long cables to reprogram.

HpTuners will work through a USB --> Serial converter, won't it?

BOSCH's Controller Area Network.
GM's version is called GMLAN
Ken
Is it still an OBDII connection or a new connection type?

It's a new connection type (physical layer), but Bosch has been using it for years.
While this new protcol is being implemented by GM, the cars will be a mix of both VPW and GMLAN.
I'm hoping they don't make a mess out of this.
Ken
It would be sweet if they made it a CAT-5 connection, or one of the other various UTP categories.

current CAN supporting vehicles such as Ford etc. still use the same OBD2 connector.
I count sheep in hex...
FYI:
The Tech2 CANdi module plugs on the end of the standard Tech2 cable which plugs into the OBDII port.

I have seen the HP Tuner software work with IOGear USB/Serial Converter (Mfg. Part: G-UC232A). I am not guaranteeing that it will work with all laptops.

I have the Keyspan USB to serial adapter and it works like a champ!
I'm running this one:
http://sewelldev.com/usbtoserial.asp and it works pretty well... I wouldn't trust a USB to serial adapter if you're doing a full pro tuner reflash... but for regular flashes it's been working fine for me

I use a belkin usb>serial adaptor.. works every time..
As another data point, here's a link to a PCMCIA serial port card. I've used these on laptops for many years when I need more than one or two ports. Never had a problem interfacing with any application. Not cheap, but good.
