Driving Behavoir for Best Tuning Data

Well, it's data collection time. I'm wondering if anyone could share some tip/tricks on how to capture the most useful data.

    - Do you do mainly single-gear pulls (a la a dyno run). If so, what gear? All legalaties aside, is 4th much moe useful than 3rd?

    - What value is in just capturing your normal driving behavoir?

    C'mon, share your secrets!

no real secrets there, take a look at the histogram and try to populate all the cells in the chart, the longer you drive and more often you hit each cell the more accurate the data will be. The full out dyno pull will be the last thing you need to do.

Myself to get the Ve and timing dialed in I use a 40 KM stretch of highway that has lots of rolling hills and a couple long gentle climbs. This enables me to hit almost every cell on the chart in one outing.

Thanks rattle, looks like I was doing the wrong thing by going out for WOT pulls.

Keeping in mind central Indiana is completely devoid of hills, what will allow me to most effectively populate the histogram?

    - Varying Throttle?
    - Varying RPM?
(I'll guess that the answer is "both&quot

What about varying load on the engine? Does pushing it down in a tall gear help reach any particular cells? I'm going to assume varying load is also important since you mentioned driving over hills.

its just a matter of hitting as many cells as many times as possible...variable loads, rpms, mph everything so you get a good idea of whats going on.
It doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be done in two weeks...

I drive around alot in the city
    up and down side roads
and then hit a backroad where I can
run on out to about 70 or 80

I set the laptop up in the passenger seat
    and turn on the histogram

like rattle said fill up as many cells as you can
    as much as you can

    I've got a 30 min route I follow everytime
that seems to work good for me

Ive been adjusting my lftf's based on average
and kr based on max values

Thanks guys, I think the question is answered.

While the thread is active, how about we talk about cells that you guys have a tough time filling? I never can fill the high load/low rpm cells. Thoughts?

high load, low rpm can't that be filled in high gears, at low mph, such as 5th 6th in 30-50 mph range.

however, for th A4's thats harder to fill.

Try using the brake and select the gear for the RPM range. Braking will load the engine...

One other piece of advice if logging AFR, try to stay in the gas at some level so that you don't get transient lean decel AFR's that skew your data. A big issue at high RPM and low load for me.

Re: Driving Behavoir for Best Tuning Data

i ordered my copy of HP Tuners yesterday, so i havent messed or logged anything with it yet, but i used to mess around with Moates datalogging and tuning software on my 3rdgen camaros...

what you'll find is most of the cells are easy to fill.. i used to drive on the hwy to the other side of the city, then cruise thru the city on the way back.. that filled most of them.

the harder ones are high load and decel... on the hwy, slow down, stick it in a high gear and punch it... nice high load to fill the cells. then just downshift a couple times, close the throttle, and let the engine slow the car down. that gets the decel down easily... regular crusing gets the low load filled in, and the rest easily gets filled by city driving.
