NEVER I repeat NEVER use someone elses bin file...it will cause more headaches then its worth almost any time...if you want copy & paste thats fine but even then if you dont know what your copying/pasting & why ask for help.

The only time anyone should really ever need one is to put a stock tune back in a car and you need to do a full rewrite & must own the licenses for both years to do so.

It doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be done in two weeks...

I always start from scratch with all of my customer cars...no matter how good I think a tune may be thats in it...I have a bunch of custom OS's from each year that I can use to throw in if need be. Learn how to tune rather then throwing in a gereric tune that you don't know much about...thats kinda why you bought hptuners right

yeah...I've built a bunch of "start with this" kind of tunes that I can put in...
    makes it a lot easier...
basically they are stock tunes with my preferred starting edits for all situations...
some labeled stock start, cam start,etc...

I do a lot of mail order correction..and I always start with a stock bin or one of my modified bins...

Is the reason you recommend starting with basically stock tunes is because no 1 engine is identical? Could you list some of the basic changes you make to start with? I want to learn how to use this power tool, but I do not want to damage my engine.

not to rob the thread, but i upgraded to the 1b sd, had to send the pcm read in, received back what i am guessing is a modified program, had to load this program, and am wondering exactly this program encompasses. i am guessing it puts the car into sd mode from looking at the new parameters. is this correct? thanks again.

its not so much that no engine is identical... its that there are always variances from car to car.
for example, my stock 02 LS1 is almost the same as a stock 99 ls1... but if you throw a stock 99ls1 timing table on it, you'll get knock.. (or maybe it was a hypertech for a 99 table.. i forgot...) in anycase, there are little things year to year that change.

if you are making a starting point for a car, you're better off copy and pasting, not flashing a bin.

for example, lets say you have a large cam car you're about to start the first time.
you would download that bin like normal. (edit: off of the PCM of the car you're tuning on.)
normally you would do some simple stuff like subtract VE down low near idle, spark changes, target RPM, base airflow ect...
but if you had another car with a similar cam, you could COPY its VE table in that area and PASTE it in (not flash that cars tune up)

you'll be closer to start from.. while it doesnt make the actual tuning of it any quicker, you wont waste time trying to get that inital idle to have it running and start from.

when you do it this way, you KNOW you only changed the VE, spark, or whatever.... you know whats changed... with a downloaded bin, you dont know whats been done without comparing everything..

Explain the differance between USING and bin file

and copy and pasting it ?

    Phil,

Doing a WRITE ENTIRE with something other than what you read/modified from your car is using another bin.

Using the compare function on a bin from your file while comparing to a downloaded bin is OK to do as long as you are just using it as a "go-by" and not doing a WRITE ENTIRE.

WRITE ENTIRE is the most risky procedure as there is opportunity to erase the PCM beyond recovery (pre-LS2 anyway!). It's like erasing Windows XP from your PC instead of the "porn.jpg" that you really wanted to delete.
If Windows XP is not there the PC doesn't do anything.

Man Id hate to lose my porn.jpg

so can you cut and paste a field from one file to yours

Example: I noticed that my tune still shows I have the 26 # injectors. Two cams ago I changed my injectors to 28.8.

I saw a stock Z06 log and wanted to cut and paste his file for this 28.8 injectors to my fuel rate V KPA table?

If that's not correct how do I get a correct fuel injector table for 28.8 injectors
    Thanks
    Phil

yeah the injector thing is mine...and there are 1000's of other things that would be fine...just make sensible decisions and ask if your not sure. Lets say you found a 2000 camaro with the identical mods...it probably wouldnt be sensible to do a write entire even with identical mods. Even copying over all of the things wouldnt be the smartest thing to do. Just be smart & question things when in doubt.

Do a compare with your file and the one you are interested in. then hit the compare button on the table of interest. If you want to copy the differences into your file, just zero the differences.

Another way (easiest) is to hit "CTRL + 5" then right click on the table of interest, Left Click "Copy Over Differences" Now you're done..

    Save and program.

I resisted for the longest time, finally started pushing the F1 key for help.
The help files will help you a lot. The only other info you need is Delta is a change in something and coefficient is a multiplier. When you make a change to your HPT file document your changes in edit / calabration details. Also make small changes, only change one parameter @ a time. for major changes I use rev levels. Like the name of the file is mytune rev c .hpt. Make sure you do not overwrite something you do not want to , always use save as , then change the file name to mytune rev d .hpt .
in the scanner export hpl to excel and look as a spread sheet.
