What is the purpose of Case Learn and Cylinder Balance

What doe Case Learn do? I have done searches on the board and no thread state what it does or what it is for. I tried it, it worked for me, seems like people are having trouble with it but what is it for ??

Also Cylinder balance what is that for ? Is it just a diagonostics check to make sure all cylinders are working or to test for a bad cylinder. MY results ranged from 96% to 101 %.

Case Learn is only utilized when replacing an engine or a PCM with a new one. Possibly if you have done a cam change. What it does is syncronize the cam signal to the crank signal.

Cylinder balance is usually used to determine if you have an injector/cylinder that is out of whack. If you really had a bad cylinder, the good ones would show more RPM drop as you have more than one down when the cylinder balance test runs.

    EC,

Would it be wise to do this on a stock car? Is it possible there could be a performance gain if it wasn't right from the factory?

Once the CASE learn is done it is not necessary (or advisable) to do it again. It's basically a setup utility.

So, is this something you would do to start tuning a cam swap ?

generally no, won't hurt anything, but generally only needed if swapping PCMS or overwriting entire PCM... you'll notice very rough idle and difficulty starting if it's needed
