    Fun day yesterday...

For the last few months my GTP seemed like it was a bit down on power for whatever reason, relooked over the tune & everything seemed fine, new plugs new wires, etc. So I had no clue what was up but haven't hit the track in a while so didn't think much of it.

So the past 2-3 weeks I started hearing a weird whine from under the hood popped it open but couldnt quite pinpoint it but figured it had to be one of the pulleys going bad so I pulled off the SC belt and checked the tensioner because my experience with LS1 cars is that they occassionally go bad & can throw a belt, etc. Nope tensioner seemed fine so rather than worrying and checking every little thing on my car I decided to just wait it out until something just broke as then I'd at least know what the problem was lol.

So yesterday I was running an errand and heard something shrapneling itself as I was driving so I pull over & shut down very quickly...well I found my problem, it was one of the idler pullies had seized up and came apart lol.

So anyway $45 and 2 new belts & 1 new idler pulley later & Im back up and running and definitely feels like I have a good bit of power back.

Forgot to get pics of the aftermath so nothing interesting to see, just wanted to get my post count up

My SC idler pulley below the timing cover water outlet was bad, apparently the way it was diagnosed was by taking off the belts and spinning it. There was a small squeaking noise it made while freespining. You could never hear it with the engine on however. I didn't think much of it until a month later while at the dealer, I was told that this idler was bad and needed replacement, so went home and changed it. New pulley was nice and quiet, less vibration. Now everytime i take my belts off, I freespin the pulleys and do the squeaky inspection test. LOL
This way I also have a frame of reference for when I start to feel drag on a pulley.

Here you go, something like this happen to you?:

Amazing what a failed bearing can do, yes? I hope you replaced it with the cheaper but better metal ones as opposed to the OEM plastic?

SC belt was fine but in the 5 or so seconds of the engine running after the pulley went the SC belt pushed the accessory belt a bit causing its partial failure.

The bearing itself failed and I guess with my extended abuse without treatment the gearing separated from the pulley lol so I had a 2 part pulley by the time it was said & done, bearing still attached to the block, pulley wedged in down near the A/C.

An no, I just replaced it with a new plastic pulley, no point in wasting more on my GTP knowing this pulley lasted 8 years

Aight, maybe not 8 years as it probably started giving up at the 7 1/2 year point, but you get the picture.

A great tool for chasing those bearing noises down is one of those mechanic's stethoscopes, available for about 10 bucks. Saved my arse a few times.

And, Bill, should someone approach you while using one, you can just tell 'em that you're the "Tuning Doctor"!!

Oh man.... that brings back terrible memories from last year at the track... Damn AAA will not come there anymore, had to push the damn car a half mile to get them to pick me up.
