Thread: E38 Speedometer ouput

    I think there is something in the tune that HP Tuners does not give us access to. I had a 2011 Camaro LS3 A6 tune that the speedo works perfectly, the vehicle speed output is set to serial and it works perfectly. I have a 2010 LS3 A6 tune that I matched every setting to the 2011 and the speedo still puts out a constant voltage. So I gave up and put the 2011 tune in the car. VOILA! Speedo works perfectly. I matched up all the applicable settings and the trans shifts and all is good. I have copies of both files.. I no idea why the 2010 would not work.

    Do you have any DTC's set?

    Also, you should have the Vehicle Speed Output set to serial. I assume you have the gauge connected to the ECM, not the TCM right? Also, is the scanner displaying Vehicle Speed (SAE) PID correctly?

    Interesting. The tune I have is for a 2013 camaro.

    No DTC's. Output set to serial. The scanner displays the speed perfectly. And if I use the bus signal, the VHX guages will disply the speed pefectly. The problem exists when I set the gauges up to use a external signal from the ECM. I talked to Speartech and he said it should work with a "Corvette tune", not really sure what difference that makes....Also, I verified that the VHX gauges will display the speed when connected to the signal generator provided with the VHX gauges, so the problem is with either the wire I'm using from the ECM (pin #57) or with the tune.

    Hi Rob,

    Please download the latest 2.24.469 or later.

    I have added a new parameter to the speedo section called “Speed Output Type”, try setting this to “VehSerial”.

    This parameter is used by the ECM hardware driver to initialize the output correctly.

    Please let me know if it works.

    Chris - I downloaded the new version and made the changes - you da man!!! The speedo now works correctly!!! On a side note, is there a place that lists the new updates or features that have been added? Thanks again,

    excellent, I will have the guys add the parameter to all E38/67 definitions

    We try to list as many as we can in the help file "What's new" section but unfortunately making things work tends to take precedence over documenting everything we do.

    I just downloaded version 2.24.476 and I do not see the upgrade "Speed Output Type". With it is suppose to be the selection "Vehserial". Is this an error in version 2.24.476 or is there something else I need to do?

    new 2.24 build up with the switch added to all E38 defs, we found that gm didn't put the switch in any E67 strategies.
    It doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be done in two weeks...

    So here's a question... A 2006 Corvette automatic ECM file has the Vehicle Speed Output set to Serial and the Speed Output Type set to VehSerial. On a manual, the Vehicle Speed Output is set to RepTOS and the Speed Output Type is set to VehRepTOS.

    Why the difference? Is one of these actually defining how the ECM input is configured? Manual transmission Corvettes use a speedo signal off of the differential that runs straight to the ECM. Automatic Corvettes get their speedo signal over GM LAN from the TCM. The reason I ask is I've got an automatic in my Z06, but we haven't actually moved the vehicle yet. I'm running a GM TCM, and CAN communications are fully working, but we obviously can't test the speedo yet. The ECM should still shoot out the same 4000 PPM output regardless, correct?

    It will if you set the if you set the output type to VehSerial. That was the problem I was having. Mine was set to VehRepTos, BUT HPTuners wasn't allowing me to see it.....

    I think the issue is with the E38 and reduced pin count it can only have one output (serial, reptos or wheel speed) and the hardware driver needs to setup the TPU channels for the RepTOS and wheel speed mode when the PCM initializes. I still don't know why they have two calibrations that seem to do the same thing though... The E67 doesn't have this limitation and uses the vehicle speed output as the calibration switch. Anyway, finally glad I found the culprit!

    Either way, very cool. Thanks to the team for adding goodies to my T42 OS too. I hope all that stuff gets added to other T42 operating systems. I'm going to take one and edit the gear ratios so you guys can find that table along with the WOT shift qualifiers.

    Now if only we had the IVT parameters...

    I know what your saying all of the changes, and small changes is a full time job... but major things like this seem like they should be called out somewhere... like in a Sticky somewhere..

    I personally check for an update once a week just because I was one that received a "fix" for improved start up after flashing... and unless I scoured the forums every day I never would have known it existed.
