Being doing some reading on tuning my truck. Considering taking the plunge. Even with my smarty tuner my truck falls flat at about 2k rpm. What to fix that.

the file you start with when using hptuners is the file you pull out of your truck. You will be tuning using your existing caalibration

What smarty are you using?
And year of truck? The SCI trucks you cannot read the tune stored on the ecm. Whether smarty UDC or hp tuners it is able to read some basic information and generates a stock tune with your vin number in the tune it provides for you to begin tuning with.
Truck is an 05 six speed. Have a smarty jr. Looking at both mm3 and hptuners. Seeing which has the best tuning community

On th 03-05 sci trucks they cannot give you a read from the ecm. What they do is supply you with a stock file for your vin/ecm specific to what was released for your truck from chrystler!.
My personal preference is mm3 with UDC Pro on the sci trucks and Warp on the 6.7 but both platforms have their hits and misses
Do you have to buy the smarty touch to get the mm3 programming? So that would double the price at least if that's correct....
You are confusing the two. The Smarty Touch is basically the same as the MM3. The Touch comes with canned tunes and accepts custom UDC Pro tuning files. The MM3 is a blank unit, no canned tunes and accepts UDC Pro tuning files and Warp Tuning files. Then you got the RaceME. The RaceME almost looks exactly like the Touch and MM3, aside from it saying RaceME and a red ring around the casing. It is for deleted 6.7L only, comes with canned delete tunes and only accepts custom Warp tuning files.
The touch does not come with the com mod while the mm3 does.

However I'm not sure if thats needed for the earlier trucks or not.
I will be using HP strictly because I need to tune mt 5R and my cummins. smarty wont do both.
It?s a trade off between the Touch and mm3 when it comes to the ComMod. Touch=canned tunes, no ComMod. MM3 no canned tunes but comes with the ComMod. ComMod only required on later models for Real Time tuning and changing tunes on the fly through the RT function.
Ok, I got it now. Thanks. I'm still learning from endless reading on here, I just like HP better. Ive been using smarty (old programming) for several years, but Im not starting over and buying all new from them.

04.5 QCSB 4WD, NV5600, Exhaust Brake, Smarty UDC, Kenny's Sintered Iron Dual Disc, BW SXE 62/68/.91 T4, DAP T4 Manifold, Stock fuel, 33" tires, 4.10 gears.
I decided to go H.P. for a few reasons. The upfront cost for a udc setup was quite expensive. Also and more importantly, their is much more ?help? available for H.P. Not a lot for diesel specific, but lots of info on gassers which will help me learn the ins and outs of the editor and scanner
Gas tuning to diesel tuning, while there are similarities, they aren?t the same. I have HP Tuners but I really don?t find it better. Yes Smarty is more expensive but you get a lot more from it as well.
