    05 lly hp

    I had a good known 80hp tune from starlite diesel. I have continued to add here and there trying to get a few more ponies. So far no trans limp and only smokes until the turbo lights off, pretty clean. Can someone look at this and estimate the hp gain from the current tune? I am no diesel tuner and would like some opinions on the tune or to know how it could have been better. Truck is just a daily for a teenager. Trans is great compared to stock but im sure there is more tuning with some drive time.

    Several years ago I installed an edge programmer that was not the hardwired into the main wiring harness assembly under the hood. I pulled the stock tune and then did each of the tunes that was in it from the tow, mileage, and I think 3 levels of performance. Thing that was cool is I downloaded each of the tunes and could see what was done to them. That way I had some "canned" verified good tunes and their corresponding modification levels.
    Long story but maybe you could give that a try if you know anyone with one of these tuners you could do a copy over all differences for the level of tune you desire.

    Probably spam considering your 1 post. I own a performance shop/dyno, customer did not want to pay for dyno time and i am no diesel specialist. Just added some fuel to a good known tune and used a timing calculator. Both of us are happy with the tune, just looking to gain some knowledge and get a guess for how much hp we added. Obviously diesel tuning from me is at a reduced rate considering my lack of knowledge.

    There is a lot of info out there on how to build x tune but not as much for making a custom tune for a diesel truck or what to expect out of a certain amount of change. Any good literature on diesel tuning that is not a step by step "how to build a x hp tune?

    Not much info out there and most are self taught (as am myself but no pro, i do it as a hobby on my own stuff) BUT..... as a rule of thumb the amount of fueling increase should translate into HP. 300hp dmax with max fueling increased 10% would yield a 30hp tune (330hp). Now there are MANY factors, and how you get from no pedal to flat footing it is another story, and drivability with good turbo response etc.... but...looking at max fueling will be a good idea. Don't forget you need the air to go with it to achieve said hp. more fuel means more boost required.

    To add to that, when you get to the higher HP numbers you run out of turbo and EGT's go up without a corresponding HP increase.

    So that should technically equate to a 140hp tune. We've not had any issues with Trans limp or smoke after boost. I believe the truck is bone stock with some equipment removed I won't name.

    I'll try and find time tonight and get it up on my tuning laptop and take a peek. 140hp is totally fine depending on how you drive it, many success stories of people running that. Stay out of those hard 4-5 and 5-6 shifts and you're fine. All depends on health of the tc and all as well. People on 35's and 150 tune run it like you stole it will last far less than someone driving it smart. But remember once you limp once.... it's the start of the end

    Yep looks like a 140hp estimate. All looks pretty normal to me but whats with the boost. Comparing it to a stock LLY file it looks like adding up to 50% boost???!!! Never seen this before.

    What do your EGT's on a wot pull look like?

    Truck does not have an egt gauge, no smoke after boost hits. I took the tune from starlite and only added 1psi to it. I appreciate you checking the file out.

    My tune looks quite a bit different. Mine is definitely not professional lol. So far it seems to do pretty well and not smoke much besides a low rpm high load situation but I havent had a chance to go back and play with it. There was some ok write ups on a duramax forum but then again it was all over the place. Some guys say not to exceed 1800ms while other guys were running more. I try to keep it under 1600ms. Eventually I am going to pay for a decent tune to compare mine to and learn from that.

    The 80hp tune I posted is from a actually diesel specialist shop. It ran on that truck for awhile and it is on another local truck that I would guess is still running. I bought the book for 50 bucks that told step by step how to build the 80hp tune.

    Looks like my reply never took for some reason last week. I agree your tune looks around 140hp. Why's there so much boost though? Never seen a tune pushing 50% over stock boost (unless my stock lly file is off)

    No idea on the boost. That is the tune from the starlite diesel book.

    It is the same with gas. "Tooner" shops think they know what they are doing lol. There is a place in nebraska that is actually decent. Im sure there are more. Most mail orders are just replicating "chip" tunes with a tiny refinement. Diesel world is soooo much more basic and easier to sell a canned tune.
