Newbie Question: P59 Operating System in a 12586243

I have a P59 that has a tune for a 2004 GMC 2500HD 8.1L using OpSYS 12587603 (serv number 12586243). i will be creating a tune for an off-road project. 2004 5.3L Flex/DBW. My question is, do i need to start with a tune that was based on the 12587603 OpSYS?

If you haven't already licensed the file from the PCM, even if you did you can still do this, just will cost more credits, you should be able to find a 2004 5.3 vehicle file from the tune repository, license the downloaded file and do a write entire.

There are 04 FF 5.3L L59 vehicles that use the same 12587603 OS that you can segment swat the engine and engine diag segments into the file you read out of your PCM. Look for Tahoe, Yukon or Suburban files as there were more of those vehicles produces with Flex than Silverados.

So, is it necessary to use the same operating system as what the PCM was originally programed with/as?

If you want to keep it easy and not have to double license (4 credits) to do a write entire with a totally different file.

To segment swap both OS have to be the same, donor and receiver. Like Ed said it saves a license cost.

The good news is that the 7603 OS probably has every option you could want available to segment swap. Some operating systems have very few options.
