    16' CM2350 and EFI live

Long story short, I "brick" my 16' Ram ecm after writing a file with the SOTF mod that didn't follow the steps. 100% my fault...
I bought ac ecm from a 14' that was previously tuned with EFI Live. I installed the ecm, changed the VIN and the truck back on the road.

    1. Any way to unbrick the old ecm?. I tried bench rom boot but no communication for any can including the J1939.
Last resource that I'm going to try in a near future is Calterm and a Nexiq to see if I find any commmunication.

    2. Can I write on a previous EFI live tune without bricking the ecm? The ecm that is installed now is up to date according to Witech when installed. My only concern is that I read horror stories about reading but don't find anything related to writing in a previously tuned CM2350B.

    Thanks!

What were you using to attempt to rom boot?

You can flash a tune into your new ecm just fine, doesn’t matter if it’s already programmed with EFILive. Every time you flash it erases the calibration in there before flashing the new one. Not sure what up to date according to witech means. If it’s got an old EFILive tune in it, it’ll have some older calibration in it. The only issue you’d likely face is the EFILive tune would likely be a CSP tune and HP Tuners won’t like that. Run risk of locking up the ecm attempting to read it on the vehicle, attempting to read it off vehicle will leave you with non functional HP Tuners file, if it is a CSP tune in there.

When I hooked up the new ECM it need a calibration update according to Witech. I did the update and truck is running.
After the update I tried to read the ECM with HP and everything is still good. I will try to write the HP Tuners file soon and see if works (fingers crossed).

For the rom boot I bench the ecm and tried Nexiq with Insite. Of course didn't work. Is Calterm what I need with the Nexiq in order to rom boot the old ecm?

    Appreciate your time. Thanks Jim!

Don’t need calterm, EFILive and HP Tuners can flash in rom boot over the regular CAN OBD2 bus as long as your bench kit has the ability to put it in rom boot at power up. If you have the proper gear to communicate over J1939 and can’t connect, might as well toss the ECM in the garbage, it’s too far screwed.

And that makes sense now the update thing, every model year 2013 and up has updates available, related to emissions and DEF use, result of EPA lawsuit against Cummins and FCA. If you applied that, the EFILive tune that was in there is no longer there.
