Potential Tuner
Could someone take a look at my 06 5.9 tune? I spent over a week playing with it.
Hey everybody,
Still learning, I've been spending the better part of last week learning and studying other tunes, youtube vids, and personal experience.
I am looking to see if someone can help me with taking a look at my tune. I believe I have it dialed the way I like it, but theres some things I am a bit unsure about.
For one, it drives great, has good take off (Although I'd like more take off from 800-1500rpm) and once it builds to around 15psi, I can floor it and it'll just absolutely run like a scalded dog. It does seem to produce some black smoke, with a hint of white smoke, but nothing crazy. Around 3200 rpm it's pouring smoke, nothing dark just a darker-than-normal haze. Anything I can do to turn that into more power?
I did set timing advance to nearly 32 degrees maximum. Should I increase timing at the lower RPM range for better take-off? I don't necessarily want to burn tires, but I do want it to come off the line a bit better.
The other thing is, when tuning with HPTuners, is it normal to take around 5-6 minutes to tune? Or is there a faster way to write to certain parts rather than the entire ECU? It is a bit annoying to do small adjustments and have to wait nearly 6 minutes for it to finish.

Honestly, and this isn't just being nice, you did better than three "professional" tuners right out of the gate, your first shot at it. Good work dude!
I'd start ramping timing in differently down low and bump up timing in cruise range to improve efficiency.
It's pretty spicy. That's a lot of uS for something you'd be towing with. Try aiming for a maximum of 2000uS until you get it to feel good and then work up in 2% increments to finalize.
Here's my truck at 2050uS and 50HP Injectors at around 50% throttle.
These trucks are undeniably fast and overpowered.

You made my whole day, I appreciate that. I have been studying and feeling it all out, I?m glad to know it?s a halfway decent tune, she feels very powerful right off the rip as it is, in fact it almost scares me how much difference it is from stock. Mainly because I?m running a stock trans, but if it blows up I will be going with a rebuild, but for now I just baby it.
Love that truck man, maybe that?s why it smokes a bit at high RPM because that?s where I increased the uS quite a bit, so I?ll dial it back down as you suggested and see how it does.
I?m a no smoke kinda guy, I want all of it to be as clean as possible, so I?ll continue to mess with it.
