I have read through many posts and numerous YouTube videos. I believe I understand the issues with the 6L80 related to heat and slip. Trying to save my trans, I bought HP tuner and then I removed the thermostat and upgraded the trans cooler. Temps stay below 180F even when towing in the Florida summer. Typically temps are around 150 during normal driving.
I've also disabled DOD, removed slip, and only have lock up in 5th and 6th gears. Everything else is stock including the converter. My goal is to ensure reliability and not looking to gain performance.
I'm considering upgrading the converter but I don't want to go through the expense unless I'm confident the mods are correct. When I log desired versus actual slip during lock up, the converter will slip up to 150 RPM during light throttle which has me concerned. I've done research and many have adjusted the gain and regulator offset. I've messed with this for months and cannot seem to better the lock up and stay at 0 slip. I've seen other posts and matched their settings with no luck. I'm looking to apply a constant pressure for lock up and not allow the pressure to vary.
You dont want a stock converter set to 0 slip. at least 5rpm is good. Also, when watching the data you'll see it vary depending on load and if a/c is on especially. Unfortunately, there are also TCC parameters we cant get access to. I learned this when I was having issues with my FTI triple disc in my 6L. Post a log and tune and we can see whats going on with it.
Thanks for the quick replies. I have uploaded the current tune and a trend log of the slip. It appears the TCM is doing its job by applying more pressure as slip increases but it backs off to 20 PSI at a minimum and then builds pressure as needed. I was hoping there was a way to hold 30 PSI and then the TCM can increase if needed? From my testing, 30 PSI will hold lock up under most light throttle conditions. For some reason the scan shows desired slip at 4.5 but read other posts stating they see the same. The tune is set to 0 slip. Appreciate the help.
Thanks, I've increased the regulator gain to 50 PSI on previous tunes. Under that tune, the TCM still allows the pressure to drop to 20 PSI. I've read some users set this up to 70 PSI but I was hesitant to go too high and create an issue. Would you recommend going higher than 50 PSI? Any concern with that pressure on a stock converter? I'm willing to upgrade the converter if that is necessary. My ultimate goal is reliability for my family.
Thank you! Went for a ride this morning and the time to lock is better and the min pressure is 40 psi. Stays locked unless I’m into the throttle. Appreciate all the help on the forum. Great professional help!
