FTI triple disc converter questions
I put a 2800 stall 9.5 inch triple disc FTI in my Silverados 6L80 back in Feb of this year. Noticed fluid coming out of the inspection cover recently. I test fit it before reinstalling the trans. It seemed to engage the pilot hole in crank and was flat against flexplate. But Im wondering if I shouldve used the spacer that comes with it? Anyone else had this happen? Its either the converter leaking, bad new fluid seal or converter isnt engaged all the way. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I build transmissions for GM and never had a fluid seal leak thats new, esp on a 6L. But I know anything is possible. Gonna take it out next weekend and look. Hoping someone with a FTI or Circle D can help! thanks.

Did you measure the endplay between the converter and flexplate? Should be 3/8", that is what the shims are for as it allows for growth when things get hot. Did you lube the converter snout inside and out so it didn't tear the o-rings in the trans?

Yes to both. I put trans gel on the converter and turbine shaft seal. I had put fresh fluid on the o-rings. the gap looked right before I bolted it up. Looked like the stock converter gap. I also set it up on the flex plate before installing. It was flush on the flexplate and the hub looked to be in the pilot hole of crank. Im hoping its just a bad new fluid seal. But I have read that FTI has had some issues with their welds lately, so who knows. Bout ready to just put a ZL1 converter in it again and say heck with it. lol
