I've been running my without any TM (Engine & Trans) for about 10K (5K is with the LS1) and the only tranny mod I have is the Vette servo. So far its been holding up great. Whether or not it will last, I'll have to wait and see.
Usually people will recommend getting at least the upgraded servo and shift kit when you start removing TM and making more power to help the trans last.
You could always remove about 50% TM, bump up the line pressure and quicken the shifts. Thats not something that is going to destroy your trans anytime soon.
I've got my shifts points set higher, raised the line pressure and reduced the time it takes to shift for mine.
