I was working on flashing a 2021 L5P Duramax last night. I attempted to use the new method of unlocking the E41 without the unlock tool. Once I licensed the ECM with credits it took me to the write entire screen. Once I began the write entire process it made it to 100% and then the status changed to failed. Once failed the write function would only report that tuning is restricted. The ECM would no longer communicate, and the truck would throw a ton of codes and no longer start. After disconnecting the batteries for 15 minutes the ECM would come back to VCM editor and the truck would run again on the stock file. I tried multiple times with the same outcome. Is there something I'm missing with the new process for unlocking directly through the OBD?
